FridayNightPulse Training Tip: LB Agility Ladder Drill

๐Ÿ“ South Anchorage WolverinesยทSunday, July 26, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At 4A programs like South Anchorage Wolverines, linebackers need to be agile, quick, and explosive to stay with the fast-paced offenses of the larger schools. To improve their ability to change direction and accelerate, we're introducing the agility ladder drill. Set up 5-6 ladders on the field, with each ladder spaced 5 yards apart. Have your LBs start at one end of the ladders, then perform a series of footwork drills, such as 'Ickey Shuffle' and 'Carioca Drill', moving through each ladder. Aim for 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet, change of direction' and 'stay low, stay fast'. This drill translates to game performance by improving LBs' ability to quickly close gaps and pursue ballcarriers laterally, making them more effective in pass coverage and run defense.
