FridayNightPulse Training Tip: LB Agility Ladder Drill for 4A Programs

๐Ÿ“ South Anchorage WolverinesยทWednesday, July 29, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 4A programs like South Anchorage Wolverines, linebackers need to be quick and agile to take on larger opponents. To improve their speed and reaction time, we recommend the agility ladder drill. Set up the ladder on the ground with 5-6 feet between each rung. Have the linebacker start at one end, then perform a series of footwork drills: 'Ickey Shuffle' (3 reps), 'Carioca Drill' (3 reps), and 'Lateral Shuffles' (3 reps). After each set, have them jump over the ladder and repeat. This drill translates to game performance by improving the linebacker's ability to quickly change direction and close gaps in coverage. Coaches can also add a 'react to the ball' component by having the linebacker react to a coach or teammate throwing a ball or flag.
