Unlocking Dominance: The 'Swarm and Shed' Drill for 7A Defensive Ends
As the 2026 season approaches, Hewitt-Trussville Huskies defensive ends are putting in the work to become the most feared pass rushers in 7A. One key drill that's helping them achieve this goal is the 'Swarm and Shed' drill. This high-intensity exercise targets the explosive acceleration and hand-shedding techniques necessary to take down opposing linemen. To run the drill, have DEs start in a three-point stance, 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. On the whistle, they must 'swarm' to the ball, using their inside foot to drive into the blocker. After 3 reps, switch to 'shedding' mode, focusing on using their hands to release the blocker. Aim for 4 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by allowing DEs to develop the speed and agility to quickly close the gap and use their hands to overcome larger blockers.
