Hoover Buccaneers Linebacker Drill: 'Read and React'

๐Ÿ“ Hoover BuccaneersยทMonday, July 6, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At the 7A level, linebackers need to be able to read and react quickly to the offense. The 'Read and React' drill is designed to improve this skill. Set up three cones in a triangle formation, with the player starting at the top cone. The coach will call out a play, such as 'strong side power' or 'weak side counter.' The player must read the play and react by moving to the corresponding cone. For example, if the play is 'strong side power,' the player would move to the right cone. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on quick decision-making and explosive movement. As the player gets more comfortable, increase the speed and difficulty of the plays. This drill translates to game performance by allowing linebackers to quickly identify and react to the offense, making them more effective tacklers and ball-hawks.
