At Hewitt-Trussville Huskies football camp, wide receivers are putting in the work to become elite route runners. One of the key drills is the 'Route Runner' exercise, designed to improve agility, speed, and route recognition. The drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest in between. Players start at the line of scrimmage, then sprint 10 yards to a designated spot, where they must quickly change direction and run a 5-yard out route. Coaches will yell 'Route!' as the player breaks off the sprint, and 'Run!' as they initiate the out route. This drill translates to game performance by allowing WRs to develop the quickness and agility needed to separate from defenders and get open downfield.
