Unlocking Speed and Agility for DEs: The Saguaro Sabercats' 5-10-5 Shuttle Drill

๐Ÿ“ Saguaro SabercatsยทFriday, July 31, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

The Saguaro Sabercats' defensive line coach has developed a high-intensity drill to improve the speed and agility of their 5A DEs. The 5-10-5 shuttle drill consists of five sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest in between each set. Players start at the 5-yard line, then sprint to the 10-yard line, change direction, and sprint back to the 5-yard line. Coaching cues include maintaining proper footwork, exploding out of the change of direction, and staying low to the ground. This drill translates to game performance by improving a DE's ability to quickly close gaps and pursue the ball carrier. By increasing speed and agility, DEs can stay in front of blockers and make plays in the backfield.
