Sprints to Success: De La Salle Spartans' Speed Training for S Players
At Open programs like De La Salle Spartans, speed and agility are key components of a successful S player. To improve their acceleration and deceleration, the Spartans' coaching staff has implemented a high-intensity sprint drill. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps of 10-yard sprints, with a 30-second rest period between sets. Players start in a 3-point stance, explode off the line, and focus on quick turnover and explosive acceleration. Coaching cues include 'Drive your heels into the ground' and 'Keep your eyes up and focused on the finish line.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, allowing S players to quickly close gaps and make tackles. It also enhances their ability to accelerate and decelerate, making them more effective in pursuit and coverage situations.
