FridayNightPulse: Edge Rusher Domination Drill for 5A DEs
For 5A defensive ends like Cherry Creek's Bruins, dominating at the point of attack is crucial. To improve their ability to set the edge and rush the quarterback, we're sharing a drill that targets speed, agility, and strength. The 'Edge Rusher Domination Drill' consists of 3 sets of 5 reps: 1) Start in a 3-point stance, explode into a sprint for 10 yards, then immediately transition into a lateral shuffle to the left and right, mimicking a defender's pursuit of a quarterback. 2) From the lateral shuffle, quickly change direction to a 45-degree angle and accelerate towards a cone or marker, simulating a speed rush. 3) Finish with a 2-foot jump over a hurdle, showcasing explosiveness off the line. Coach your DEs to 'rip the ball' and 'change direction quickly' as they execute each rep. This drill translates to game performance by improving their ability to set the edge, pursue the quarterback, and finish plays with explosiveness.
