Unlocking Separation: The Tiger Drill for Wide Receivers

๐Ÿ“ Hand TigersยทThursday, July 2, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top programs like Hand High School's Tigers, coaches are always looking for ways to give their wide receivers an edge. One effective drill to separate from defenders is the 'Tiger Drill.' Set up three stations: a 5-yard box, a 10-yard box, and a 15-yard box. At each station, have a defender line up 5 yards off the receiver. The receiver will start at the line of scrimmage, then sprint to the 5-yard box, making a sharp cut to the outside. The defender will try to stay with them. After a 30-second sprint, the receiver will repeat the drill at the 10-yard box and then the 15-yard box. Aim for 3 sets of 10 reps at each station. Coaching cues include 'keep your speed through the cut' and 'stay low to the ground.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching receivers to separate from defenders at different depths, a crucial skill for making big plays.
