FridayNightPulse Training Tip: RB Power Through Contact Drill
At the lower-level programs like the Maloney Spartans, running backs need to develop the strength and technique to power through contact. This drill focuses on building explosive power and reducing the risk of injury. Set up a series of 3-4 cones spaced 5 yards apart. The RB starts at the first cone and performs a 3-step drop, then immediately explodes through the contact zone (second cone). The coach provides a pad strike or a tackling dummy to simulate the hit. The RB must maintain their balance and drive through the contact. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. This drill translates to game performance by teaching RBs to stay low, maintain their center of gravity, and generate power from their legs. It also helps build confidence in their ability to take a hit and keep running.
