Sprint Through the Gauntlet: A Drill for Speed and Agility

๐Ÿ“ Hand TigersยทTuesday, July 7, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For small school programs like Hand High's Tigers, developing speed and agility in their skill players is crucial for success on the gridiron. One effective drill to improve these skills is the 'Sprint Through the Gauntlet.' This drill involves setting up three cones in a zig-zag pattern, with a fourth cone at the end of the course. Players start at the first cone and must navigate through the gauntlet, accelerating through each section. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'explosive start,' 'stay low,' and 'change direction quickly.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate through tight spaces, making them more effective in the open field and on special teams. It also enhances their overall speed and agility, giving them an edge over opponents.
