Shelton Gaels CBs: Master the 'Backpedal-Plant-Step' Drill
As the Shelton Gaels prepare for another season, cornerbacks coach, Mike Smith, emphasizes the importance of mastering the 'Backpedal-Plant-Step' drill. This drill targets the fundamental skills required for elite cornerbacks: speed, agility, and reaction time. To execute the drill, have CBs start in a backpedal position (set up 5 yards off the line of scrimmage). On the coach's signal, they explosively plant their outside foot and step into a 45-degree angle, keeping their inside foot anchored. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Keep your eyes on the quarterback, not the receiver' and 'Drive through the plant foot.' This drill translates to game performance by improving CBs' ability to quickly change direction and maintain speed while tracking receivers. By mastering the 'Backpedal-Plant-Step' drill, Shelton Gaels cornerbacks will be better equipped to handle the physical demands of the game.
