Tight End Training Tip: 'Box Out' Drill for LL Programs

๐Ÿ“ Southington Blue KnightsยทMonday, July 13, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Southington High School, our Blue Knights coaching staff has implemented a drill to improve tight end (TE) positioning and separation from defenders. The 'Box Out' drill is designed to enhance a TE's ability to create space and secure passes in traffic. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps. Players line up 5 yards apart, with a defender positioned 3 yards off the line of scrimmage. On the snap, the TE must 'box out' the defender, using their hands and body to shield them from the ball. The coach or trainer throws a pass to the TE, who must secure the catch while maintaining their position. This drill translates to game performance by teaching TEs to protect the ball and create separation in tight spaces.
