Shut Down the Competition: CB Drills for Young Spartans
At Maloney High School's football camp, cornerbacks are focusing on the 'Shadow Stick' drill to improve their footwork and reaction time. This drill requires players to start in a defensive stance, then quickly change direction to 'stick' with a coach or teammate who is moving at a moderate pace. The coach will give a verbal cue, and the CB must mirror the coach's movements, staying within a designated 'shadow' area. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay on my hip' and 'mirror my movement.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing CBs to develop the quick reaction time and agility needed to stay with receivers in man coverage. It also helps build trust in their ability to stay on the ball.
