FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Shelton Gaels DE Drill

๐Ÿ“ Shelton GaelsยทFriday, July 17, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

The Shelton Gaels' defensive line coach has created a drill to improve DEs' speed and agility in pursuit of the quarterback. The 'Rapid 5' drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps. Each rep involves a 5-yard dash, followed by a 180-degree cut, and finishing with a 5-yard sprint to a designated cone. Coaches cue the DEs to 'explode' off the line, 'change direction quickly,' and 'finish strong.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the DEs' ability to quickly close the gap on the QB and make tackles in pursuit. The 180-degree cut also simulates the quick changes of direction that DEs face on the field, allowing them to develop the necessary agility to stay with faster opponents.
