Explosive Edge: A DE Drill for LL Programs

๐Ÿ“ Fairfield Prep JesuitsยทSunday, July 26, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For defensive end players at top-level programs like Fairfield Prep Jesuits, developing explosive edge speed is crucial for success. To improve this aspect of their game, coaches can implement a drill that targets rapid acceleration and deceleration. The 'Lateral Shuffle' drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps with 30 seconds rest between sets. Players start in a 3-point stance, then quickly shuffle laterally 5 yards to the left and right, emphasizing explosive acceleration out of the stance. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'explosive hips.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing DEs to rapidly close gaps and change direction, making it an essential addition to any pre-season training regimen. By incorporating the Lateral Shuffle drill, DEs at LL programs can improve their edge speed and become more effective pass rushers.
