FridayNightPulse Training Tip: 'Rush the Pocket' Drill for Defensive Ends at LL Programs

๐Ÿ“ Fairfield Prep JesuitsยทThursday, July 30, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At LL programs like Fairfield Prep Jesuits, developing explosive pass rushers is crucial. The 'Rush the Pocket' drill targets DEs' ability to accelerate off the line and beat blockers. Set up cones to form a 5-yard pocket. DEs start in a 3-point stance, 5 yards from the pocket. On the whistle, they rush the pocket, aiming for the center of the cone formation. After 3 seconds, DEs must change direction, bursting through a gap between cones. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Rush the pocket, don't get blocked!' and 'Change direction, create chaos!' This drill translates to game performance by improving DEs' ability to quickly close gaps and create pressure on the quarterback. It also enhances their agility and reaction time, making them more effective in game situations.
