TE Training Tip: 'Slant and Go' Drill for Caesar Rodney Riders
The 'Slant and Go' drill is a crucial exercise for tight ends at Div I programs like Caesar Rodney Riders. This drill focuses on the ability to quickly release off the line and create separation from defenders. To run the drill, set up two lines of cones 5 yards apart, with a third line of cones 10 yards downfield. The TE will start at the first line of cones, then sprint to the second line, planting their outside foot and turning upfield. The coach will throw a slant pass to the TE, who must quickly release and run a 10-yard route to the third line of cones. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'release, release, go' and 'keep your eyes on the quarterback.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the TE's ability to create separation and quickly get open downfield.
