Explosive Route Running for Wide Receivers
At top Div I programs like Appoquinimink Jaguars, wide receivers must possess elite speed, agility, and route-running skills. To improve in these areas, we recommend the following drill: 'Route Box Drill.' Set up four cones in a square formation, 5 yards apart. Divide your receivers into pairs, with one player at the line of scrimmage and the other at the cone box. On the coach's signal, the receiver at the line of scrimmage must sprint to the cone box, then change direction and accelerate to the next cone, mimicking a deep route. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Fast feet, quick hands,' and 'change of direction.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a receiver's ability to quickly accelerate and decelerate, creating separation from defenders and making them more effective in the open field.
