Route Running Mastery for Apopka Blue Darters WRs
As the Apopka Blue Darters prepare for the upcoming season, wide receivers must refine their route running skills to outmaneuver defenders. Coach Thompson recommends the following drill to improve WRs' speed, agility, and ball-handling skills. The 'Slant and Go' drill consists of three sets of 10 reps. Set 1: Start at the line of scrimmage, sprint 5 yards, then quickly change direction to a 45-degree angle, finishing with a 5-yard sprint to the sideline. Set 2: Add a defender to the drill, focusing on beating the man with a quick release. Set 3: Incorporate a quarterback to throw a slant pass, emphasizing the WR's ability to separate from the defender and secure the catch. Coaching cues include 'Quick feet, quick hands' and 'Separate, don't just run.' This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to create separation and make plays in tight spaces.
