Explosive Power for RBs: The 'Hawk's 3-Step Acceleration Drill
At Mill Creek High School, our 7A program is gearing up for a dominant season with a focus on explosive power for our running backs. One key drill that's helping them take their game to the next level is the 3-Step Acceleration Drill. This drill targets the RB's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate through the hole. To run the drill, set up three cones in a zig-zag pattern, with 5 yards between each cone. Have the RB start at the first cone and perform a 3-step approach, focusing on explosive power and speed through the hole. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'exploding through the hole' and 'keeping the feet quick.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the RB's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate through the hole, leaving defenders in the dust.
