Unlocking Tight End Potential: The Mill Creek Hawks' 'Y' Route Drill

๐Ÿ“ Mill Creek HawksยทMonday, July 20, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 7A season approaches, tight ends at programs like the Mill Creek Hawks must be prepared to make plays in the passing game. One effective drill to improve their route-running skills is the 'Y' Route Drill. Set up four cones in a square formation, with the first cone 5 yards from the line of scrimmage and the second cone 10 yards deep. The third cone is 5 yards wide of the second cone, and the fourth cone is 5 yards wide of the third cone. Players start at the first cone, then sprint to the second cone, making a sharp cut to the third cone. From there, they sprint to the fourth cone, making another sharp cut back to the quarterback. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on quick cuts and explosive acceleration. This drill translates to game performance by improving tight ends' ability to create separation and get open quickly. Coaches can also add a defender to the drill to simulate game-like pressure.
