Summer Training for CBs: The 'Backpedal to the Line' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Mill Creek HawksยทTuesday, July 21, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For cornerbacks at 7A programs like Mill Creek Hawks, developing elite speed and agility is crucial to success on the field. One effective drill to improve these skills is the 'Backpedal to the Line' exercise. Set up 10-15 cones in a zigzag pattern, 5 yards apart. Have your CBs start at the first cone, backpedaling to the second cone while keeping their eyes on the coach or a target. As they reach the second cone, they should quickly change direction and sprint to the third cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Keep your eyes on the prize,' 'Drive through your back foot,' and 'Finish strong.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, agility, and the ability to quickly change direction on the field.
