Improving Kickoff Coverage for 7A Kickers

๐Ÿ“ Mill Creek HawksยทTuesday, July 28, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 2026 season approaches, kickoff coverage will be a key factor for 7A programs like Mill Creek Hawks. To improve this aspect of their game, head coach can implement the '3-Step Shuffle Drill.' This drill focuses on quick reaction and decision-making for kickoff specialists. Set up cones in a zigzag pattern, with 10 yards between each cone. Players start at the first cone, then perform a 3-step shuffle to the next cone. After reaching the second cone, they immediately pivot 90 degrees and repeat the process. Aim for 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'shuffle, don't run' and 'stay low, stay quick.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time and agility, allowing kickoffs specialists to quickly close gaps and make tackles.
