Boosting Kicking Game with the 'Anchor and Strike' Drill
At the Mililani Trojans' Open program, kickers are working on their technique with the 'Anchor and Strike' drill. This drill focuses on building leg strength and accuracy. Start by having the kicker stand with their non-kicking foot forward, toes pointing slightly outward. The kicking foot should be anchored to the ground with the toe pointing straight ahead. Hold a medicine ball or weight plate at chest level. On the coach's signal, the kicker strikes the ball forward, keeping their ankle locked and striking with the laces. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the kicker's ability to generate power and accuracy on field goals and extra points. It also helps build leg strength, reducing the risk of injury.
