Tightening Up the Tight End: A Pre-Season Drill for 4A TE's
At 4A programs like West Des Moines Valley Tigers, Tight Ends are crucial to a team's success. To prepare for the upcoming season, we're focusing on a drill that targets TE's ability to release off the line and create separation. The 'Speed Box' drill involves setting up 3 cones in a box formation, with the TE starting at the front of the box. On the whistle, they must sprint to the back of the box, then quickly change direction to a designated 'release' point. The coach provides a 'hands' cue to remind the TE to release off the line with a strong, inside release. Aim for 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the TE's ability to quickly release and create separation from defenders, giving the QB a clear passing lane.
