Tiger-Approved RB Drill: Building Speed and Power for Cedar Falls' 4A Title Run
As Cedar Falls Tigers prepare for the 2026 season, running back coach John Smith emphasizes the importance of explosive acceleration and power. To achieve this, Smith's team will be running the 'Tiger Tornado' drill, focusing on RBs' ability to quickly change direction and generate force. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps: 1) Start at the line of scrimmage, explode 5 yards downfield, then immediately change direction and accelerate back to the starting point; 2) Perform a 180-degree cut while maintaining top speed; 3) Drive through a mini-hurdle (12 inches high) while keeping the feet shoulder-width apart. Coaching cues include 'Quick feet, fast hands' and 'Drive through the hurdle like you're running over a defender.' This drill translates to game performance by improving RBs' ability to break tackles and make big plays in the open field.
