Quarterback Readiness: The 'Quick Release' Drill for 4A Programs

๐Ÿ“ Iowa City West TrojansยทThursday, July 9, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 2026 season approaches, Iowa City West Trojans' quarterback coach, Mike Smith, emphasizes the importance of a quick release in game situations. To improve this skill, Smith recommends the 'Quick Release' drill. Divide the quarterbacks into pairs, with one player as the 'chaser' and the other as the 'thrower'. The thrower will start in a shotgun formation, while the chaser will line up 10 yards downfield. The thrower will drop back and release the ball as soon as they feel pressure from the chaser. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the target' and 'release the ball as soon as you feel pressure'. This drill translates to game performance by allowing quarterbacks to develop a consistent release under pressure, leading to more accurate passes and better decision-making.
