Explosive Power for 4A RBs: The Valley Tiger Blast Drill
As the West Des Moines Valley Tigers prepare for the upcoming 4A season, running backs need to develop explosive power to break tackles and gain extra yards. The Valley Tiger Blast Drill is designed to improve RBs' ability to generate force and speed. Set up 3-4 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Players start at the first cone, then dash to the second cone, exploding into a jump and landing on both feet. Immediately, they sprint to the third cone, repeating the jump. After 3 sets of 10 reps, have players switch directions. Coaching cues: 'Blast off the ground,' 'Land softly,' and 'Drive through the contact.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching RBs to quickly change direction, generate force, and absorb contact, making them more effective in the open field.
