Valley Tigers LB Drill: 'Speed to the Ball'

๐Ÿ“ West Des Moines Valley TigersยทTuesday, July 28, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

The 'Speed to the Ball' drill is a crucial component of any 4A linebacker's training regimen, especially for West Des Moines Valley Tigers players. This drill focuses on developing quick reaction time, agility, and tackling skills. To set up the drill, place 10-15 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. LBs will start at the first cone and weave through the course, then immediately change direction to tackle a pad-wearing coach at the final cone. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Speed to the Ball' and 'Tackle the Target.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing LBs to practice explosive acceleration and reaction time, essential for making tackles in open space.
