Finishing Blocks: A Drilling Technique for 4A OL Success

๐Ÿ“ Cedar Falls TigersยทWednesday, July 29, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For Cedar Falls Tigers and other 4A programs, dominating in the trenches starts with mastering the finishing block drill. This exercise targets the OL's ability to seal the edge and create space for the RB. To run the drill, set up a line of three cones, spaced 5 yards apart. OL players will start at the first cone, then sprint to the second cone, planting their outside foot and finishing with a block on the third cone. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on explosive acceleration and powerful block execution. Coaching cues include: 'Finish with your feet,' 'Seal the edge,' and 'Drive through the block.' This drill translates to game performance by developing the OL's ability to quickly close the gap and create a seam for the RB to exploit. By incorporating the finishing block drill into their pre-season training, the Tigers can look forward to a strong 4A campaign.
