Rigby Trojans Kicker Prep: Building Leg Strength with the 'Box Step-Up' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Rigby TrojansยทThursday, July 2, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the Rigby Trojans prepare for the upcoming 5A season, special teams coach, Mark Johnson, emphasizes the importance of building leg strength for their kickers. The 'Box Step-Up' drill targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, essential for explosive kicking power. To perform the drill, place a box or bench 12 inches high and 18 inches wide. Kicker starts in a lunge position with the front foot on the box and the back foot on the ground. Step up onto the box with the front foot and immediately step back down to the starting position. Complete 3 sets of 12 reps with 60 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'explosive step-up' and 'quick return to lunge position.' This drill translates to game performance by increasing kicking power and accuracy, allowing kickers to drive the ball deep downfield.
