Explosive Acceleration Drill for RBs: 'The Box Drill'
At 5A programs like the Boise Brave, running backs need to be explosive and quick to break tackles and gain yardage. One effective drill to improve acceleration is 'The Box Drill'. This drill targets the RB's ability to rapidly change direction and accelerate through a small space. The setup: three cones in a box formation (5 yards x 5 yards). The RB starts at one corner of the box, then accelerates to the center cone, changes direction, and accelerates to the opposite corner. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Fast feet, quick hips, and explosive acceleration.' This drill translates to game performance by replicating the RB's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate through tight spaces, allowing them to break tackles and gain extra yards.
