FridayNightPulse: 'Shadow and React' Drill for 4A Cornerbacks
At 4A programs like Twin Falls Bruins, cornerbacks need to be quick, agile, and anticipatory. One effective drill to improve these skills is the 'Shadow and React' exercise. Divide players into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the cornerback. The receiver will run a 5-yard out route, while the cornerback is required to mirror the receiver's movements, staying within 1-2 feet of their body. After 3-5 seconds, the receiver will plant their foot and react to a fake throw. The cornerback must quickly change direction and react to the fake, staying in phase with the receiver. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. This drill translates to game performance by improving the cornerback's ability to stay with receivers in coverage and quickly react to changes in the play.
