Explosive Acceleration Drill for 5A Running Backs
The Boise Brave's running backs are looking to improve their acceleration off the line of scrimmage this season. To achieve this, they'll be incorporating a drill that targets their ability to quickly change direction and explode into a high-speed run. The 'L-Drill' involves setting up four cones in an 'L' shape, with the running back starting at the top of the 'L'. On the whistle, they'll sprint to the first cone, then quickly change direction and accelerate to the second cone, before making another sharp cut to the third cone. The final cone is a 'speed cone' where they'll focus on maintaining top-end speed. Run 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet,' 'explosive acceleration,' and 'stay low.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the running back's ability to quickly get to the edge and make defenders miss.
