FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Mastering the 3-Step Pass Rush for DEs

๐Ÿ“ Mountain View MavericksยทThursday, July 30, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 5A programs like Mountain View Mavericks, defensive ends need to develop a strong pass rush to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. One effective drill to improve this skill is the 3-Step Pass Rush. Have DEs line up 5 yards off the ball, with their feet shoulder-width apart. On the coach's signal, they take 3 steps forward, focusing on quick, explosive movements. As they step, they aim to get their hands up and in the quarterback's face. After the 3 steps, they explosively drive forward, using their legs to generate power. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'hands up.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing DEs to rapidly close the distance to the quarterback, creating pressure and disrupting timing. It also improves their ability to read the quarterback's eyes and react quickly to the ball.
