St. Rita Mustangs' Multisport Athlete Eyes College Flag Football Opportunities
As the inaugural NCAA Division 1 flag football season approaches in 2028, multisport athletes from the Chicago area are taking notice of the growing opportunities. For St. Rita Mustangs' standout athlete, Sarah Johnson, the decision to pivot to flag football is driven by the chance to secure a college scholarship. Coaches Liz and Katie Sowers at the University of Nebraska have announced 12 scholarships for the program's 2028 inaugural season. Johnson is also exploring options at Ottawa University, Kansas, which offers up to 12 NAIA scholarships. Additionally, Keiser University, Florida, and Midland University, Nebraska, have expressed interest in recruiting Johnson. While UT Arlington has announced plans to develop its NCAA Division 1 flag football program, it has not yet begun offering scholarships. Johnson's decision to focus on flag football is a strategic move to capitalize on the growing demand for college flag football talent.
