Route Running for WRs: The 'Speed Slant' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Mount Carmel CaravanยทSaturday, July 11, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At the top 8A programs like Mount Carmel Caravan, wide receivers are constantly looking for ways to improve their route running. One effective drill to add to your summer training is the 'Speed Slant' drill. This drill focuses on quick releases and precise footwork, mirroring the fast-paced nature of high school football. To set up the drill, have your WRs line up 5 yards off the line of scrimmage with a defender 2 yards off the line. On the snap, they'll sprint to the 5-yard line, then quickly plant their outside foot and release to the slant route. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on quick releases and proper footwork. Coaching cues include 'speed to the 5' and 'release to the slant.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing WRs to develop the quick releases and precise footwork necessary to beat defenders off the line.
