Unlocking Tight End Potential with the 'Y' Route Drill

๐Ÿ“ Mount Carmel CaravanยทMonday, July 20, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top 8A programs like Mount Carmel Caravan, tight ends are a crucial component of the offense. To take their game to the next level, we're introducing the 'Y' Route Drill. This drill focuses on the tight end's ability to separate from defenders and secure passes in traffic. To run the drill, set up two cones 10 yards apart, with a third cone 5 yards beyond the second. The tight end starts at the first cone, then runs a 5-yard route to the second cone, before immediately turning and running a 3-yard 'Y' route to the third cone. Perform 3 sets of 15 reps, focusing on quick releases and sharp cuts. Coaching cues include 'get skinny' and 'separate with speed.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching tight ends to create separation and make plays in tight spaces, a critical skill for success in the passing game.
