FridayNightPulse: Explosive Edge Rush Drill for 6A DEs
At the top 6A programs like East St. Louis Flyers, defensive ends need to be able to explosively rush the quarterback and disrupt the offense's timing. To improve this skill, coaches can run the 'Rapid Fire Rush' drill. Have DEs line up 5 yards off the ball, with a focus on keeping their eyes on the quarterback. On the whistle, they explosively rush the QB, focusing on a quick, inside-outside move. Coaches should provide cues like 'Fast feet, fast hands' and 'Bend, don't break.' Run 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving DEs' ability to quickly close the gap and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. It also helps build their endurance and agility for the long, physical battles that come with playing in 6A.
