Shut Down the Competition: CB Drills for 8A Programs
Defensive backfield coaches at top 8A programs like Mount Carmel Caravan are already gearing up for the upcoming season with a crucial drill to sharpen their cornerbacks' skills. The '5-10-5 Shuttle' drill targets the quick change of direction and speed that CBs need to excel in man coverage. Set up four cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Start at the first cone, sprint to the second (10 yards), then backpedal to the third (5 yards), and finally cut to the fourth cone (10 yards). Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Stay low, inside foot first,' and 'Accelerate out of the backpedal.' This drill translates to game performance by improving CBs' ability to quickly close gaps and stay in phase with receivers, a critical aspect of shutting down top opponents in the 8A classification.
