Shut Down the Opposition: Carmel Greyhounds' CB Drill for Summer Camp
Cornerbacks at 6A programs like Carmel Greyhounds need to be in top shape to keep up with the speed and agility of opposing receivers. One effective drill to improve CB performance is the 'Shadow Shuffle.' Set up a series of cones or markers 5 yards apart, forming a zigzag pattern. Divide the CBs into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. The receiver starts at the first cone, and the defender must mirror their movements, staying within 1-2 yards of the receiver. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include: 'Stay low and balanced,' 'Keep your eyes on the receiver,' and 'React to the ball, not the receiver.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to stay with receivers on out routes and create turnovers.
