Explosive Power for 5A RBs: The Cathedral Fighting Irish's 'Box Jump Blast' Drill
As the 2026 season approaches, running backs at 5A programs like Cathedral Fighting Irish are looking to gain an edge. Coach Mike Hart's team has developed a drill that targets explosive power and speed. The 'Box Jump Blast' drill involves three 12-inch boxes placed in a row. Players start at the first box, then jump up and land softly on the second box, immediately jumping up again to the third box. They then quickly change direction, jumping back down to the second box, and finally landing softly on the first box. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'explosive jump' and 'soft landing.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a RB's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate out of cuts. It also enhances their power and speed, making them a more elusive and effective runner.
