Center Grove CBs: Master the 'Shadow Box' Drill for Shutdown Coverage

๐Ÿ“ Center Grove TrojansยทTuesday, July 14, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Summer is in full swing, and 6A programs like Center Grove are gearing up for another season of gridiron greatness. Cornerbacks are the backbone of any top-notch defense, and at Center Grove, Coach Thompson is putting in the work to develop his CBs into shutdown artists. The 'Shadow Box' drill is a game-changer, and it's simple to implement. Set up a series of 5x5 cones in a zig-zag pattern, with a defender at the starting point. On the coach's signal, the defender must shadow the receiver through the course, staying 5 yards off their back. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Stay low, stay loose, and stay on the receiver's hip.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, footwork, and spatial awareness. It's a must-have in any CB's offseason arsenal.
