Cathedral Fighting Irish CBs: Master the 'Backpedal-to-Cut' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Cathedral Fighting IrishยทFriday, July 24, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

This pre-season drill is designed to improve 5A cornerbacks' ability to quickly transition from backpedal to plant-and-drive, a crucial skill in press coverage. Set up a 10-yard zone with cones. Divide players into pairs, with one player in the backpedal position and the other as the receiver. The receiver will start at the 5-yard line and sprint towards the corner. The cornerback must backpedal 5 yards, then plant their outside foot and drive towards the receiver. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Keep your eyes on the receiver, stay low, and explode off your outside foot.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing cornerbacks to quickly close the gap on receivers and maintain tight coverage. It also helps develop the necessary speed and agility to stay with faster opponents.
