Fire Up Your RBs: The 'Power Through Contact' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Lawrence Free State FirebirdsยทMonday, July 6, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At 6A programs like Lawrence Free State Firebirds, running backs need to be able to power through contact and break tackles. To improve this skill, we're introducing the 'Power Through Contact' drill. This drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps. Each rep starts with a 10-yard sprint down the field, then a 5-yard cut to the left or right, and finally a 5-yard change of direction through a small cone or pad. The key coaching cue is to 'explosively drive through the cone, keeping your legs and back straight.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching RBs to maintain their speed and power through contact, allowing them to break tackles and gain extra yards.
