Fire Up Your O-Line: The 'Chain Reaction' Drill
For 6A programs like Lawrence Free State Firebirds, dominating in the trenches requires a strong foundation in technique and strength. One effective drill to enhance your O-line's performance is the 'Chain Reaction' drill. This exercise targets the players' ability to explode off the line and create a chain reaction of blocks. To set up the drill, place a series of chains or cones 5 yards apart along the line of scrimmage. Have the OL players start in a three-point stance and explode off the line, aiming to knock over a chain or cone. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. As the players progress, increase the distance between the chains. Coaching cues include 'Drive your feet,' 'Snap your hips,' and 'Finish with power.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the OL's ability to generate power and speed off the line, creating a chain reaction of blocks that can lead to big gains on the ground.
