Unlocking the Tight End Potential: The 'Box Out' Drill
At 6A programs like Lawrence Free State Firebirds, tight ends (TEs) are crucial in both the passing and running games. To improve their box-out skills, we recommend the following drill: 'Box Out.' This drill focuses on the TE's ability to seal the edge and create space for their quarterback. To run the drill, set up a line of cones 5 yards apart. Have the TE start at the line of scrimmage, then sprint to the cone 5 yards downfield. As they reach the cone, they must immediately box out a defender with their feet and hands, creating a seal. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'seal the edge,' 'keep your feet wide,' and 'hands up.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the TE's ability to block and create space for their quarterback, making them a more effective asset in the offense.
