Golden Eagles' Linebacker Drill: 'The Shuffle and Fill'
At Bishop Carroll High School, our 5A program is gearing up for another championship season. One key component of our linebacker development is the 'Shuffle and Fill' drill. This drill focuses on quick footwork, reaction time, and gap discipline. To set up: divide the linebackers into pairs, with one player as the blocker and the other as the defender. The blocker will start 5 yards off the line of scrimmage, while the defender begins 3 yards deep. On coach's signal, the blocker will shuffle-step to the defender's left, forcing them to fill the gap. The defender must quickly shuffle-step to the right, maintaining proper alignment. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving linebackers' ability to read and react to blocking schemes, ultimately leading to more effective tackles and a stronger defensive unit.
