Explosive Edge: Blue Valley Northwest Huskies Defensive End Drill
Defensive ends at 6A programs like Blue Valley Northwest Huskies need to be explosive and agile to take down opponents. To improve their speed and quickness, Huskies' defensive line coach, John Smith, recommends the following drill: "The Box Drill." Players will start in a three-point stance with their feet shoulder-width apart. On the whistle, they'll explosively jump up and land in a box stance with their feet together. From there, they'll quickly change direction and jump up again, repeating the process for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include "quick feet" and "explosive jump." This drill translates to game performance by improving the defensive end's ability to quickly change direction and pursue the quarterback. By incorporating this drill into their training, Huskies' defensive ends will be better prepared to take down opponents this season.
